The International Peace Institute was founded by a group of individuals from within and outside of the United Nations who believed that a thoroughly independent institution, free from official constraints, could make a unique contribution to multilateral efforts to prevent and settle armed conflicts around the world. The vision of the founders, coupled with the hard work and dedication of IPI's four presidents, has resulted in a dynamic international research institute.

The International Peace Institute is an independent, international not-for-profit think tank with a staff representing more than 20 nationalities, centered in New York across from United Nations headquarters, with a second office in Vienna.  IPI is dedicated to promoting the prevention and settlement of conflicts between and within states by strengthening international peace and security institutions.  To achieve its purpose, IPI employs a mix of policy research, convening, publishing and outreach.

  • Shaping the international agenda to bring experts and policymakers together to respond to both traditional as well as emerging security threats
  • Strengthening international institutions by analyzing transnational threats to peace and security
  • Creating platforms for decision makers to build consensus to facilitate multilateral response
  • Publishing analysis on current global issues
  • Providing trainings on contemporary conflict resolution and policy

  • Since 1970, the International Peace Institute, from its early role as a training academy, has developed a mature identity as a policy-driven institute for best thinking and practice across the UN’s broad peace and security agenda
  • As a convening power, IPI has facilitated numerous strategic thinking and policy development events on issues related to peace and security
  • IPI has produced a variety of publications as an integral part of its mission to inform international policymaking with cutting-edge research and analysis. These range from major, multi-author studies to monographs, policy papers, and meeting notes. Since 1998, IPI has extended its reach with the publication of over 200 books, meeting notes, and policy papers that are widely cited by government and international officials, scholars and the media
  • Highest rankings by major international charity watchdogs: Charity Navigator and the American Institute of Philanthropy
